Sailing Dinghy

The Pram Dinghy

The pram dinghy is a relatively basic design, so named because of its flattened bow and stern. It is a relatively simple boat to build and is easily handled by one-person, although many have the capacity to carry another adult or two children in addition to the helm. It has been popular with home boatbuilders for many decades. The simple pram dinghy design shown on this page has a single sail, the mainsail, along with a gunter rig. The gunter rig comprises a mast, gaff and boom plus the usual standing and running rigging. The use of a mast and gaff allows the sail to have a long leech, without requiring a one-piece mast of a similar length. Many pram dinghies are transported to and from their sailing grounds on a road trailer and the gunter rig often allows everything to be stowed inside the boat, once it has been de-rigged. The pram sailing dinghy design will normally have a lifting centreboard held in a centreboard case plus a rudder at the stern, controlled by a tiller arm.
